Hi, I just registered hoping you could help me choose a vps that will be used for a guild website. Since I’m new here and it’s a bit much to ask the community to act as a middleman on my first day I’ll try to be specific about myself and what I need.
First of all, I have no experience with VPS hosting or any other hosting for that matter. However I’m a pretty sharp self-learner. Currently, we’re using one of those ready-for-use, all-in-one guild website hosts (I won’t mention any names), but there’s several problems. The user/member/forum management is quite poor and limited. They only allow us to mess with the CSS, so there are design issues regarding IE and Firefox compatibility. And the file hosting service is awkward and not sufficient for our needs.
The new site will include a forum and eqdkp (for those who know what that is) so I need a vps that supports phpbb3 and mysql. (If these are standard in all VPS, please excuse me. Again, I’m new to all of this.)
Bandwidth and ram. I have no clue about the actual numbers. I don’t expect a lot of traffic; the guild is quite esoteric so I’m sure most of the traffic will be our members only. However there needs to be enough such that members/users can upload/download videos (~600mb in size), images, and few other files (under 10mb).
Concerning size, I’m not sure how much storage the forums and other data will require. I did mention some large video files, but at any one point in time, there will only be one or 2 uploaded. My guess is that 5gb-10gb will be plenty, but correct me if I’m wrong.
Linux or windows, doesn’t really matter. I’m learning from scratch anyway. If one or the other is genuinely easier to setup/manage (I know this probably doesn’t mean much the technically savvy), then it might swing my decision a bit.
For price I’m considering $20-$30 a month, but with no contracts. I don’t want it where I pay $20 a month but only if I sign up for a year or half. The reason for this is building and maintaining the website and server may turn out to be too time-consuming for me. (I’m willing to learn, but there’s a lot more to it than that.) If that’s the case then I would need to halt the project until I can find someone more qualified for the task.
Finally, customer/technical support is very important to me. I’m not looking for the best bargain that will get me great specs for the cost, but non-existent support. Undoubtedly, I will run into some problems and have many questions, so I would consider quality support a necessity.
I’m expecting to make the purchase in about a week or two, but I’m asking now so I will have some time to look into each suggestion.
